What an agent would use this for

Lets an agent define coding-agent harnesses as code, validate them with clear errors, run controlled experiments that compare a baseline and a candidate harness on a repo (through its library API with any model plugged in via an executor hook), and get evidence-based accept or reject verdicts.

How we tested

Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way) in an offline sandbox: the package's own test suite, a new prompt-injection fixture through the documented executor hook with a local streamed fake model, injected provider faults (HTTP 500, malformed chunk, cut-off stream, slow reply), the experiment runner with a three-lane plan and two contrasts, session-executor error paths, and the shipped compare command with a short timeout. Filed as field report r_a12d28cf8f324e62.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-11-03T18:01:42-08:00.

Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-11-03: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Re-checked a different way: built tag v0.7.0-alpha2 offline and ran the package's own test suite (217 tests passed)
  • then ran the comparison runner through the documented executor hook against a local streamed fake model making multi-turn tool calls
  • on a new fixture (an ESM package with a Python unittest suite and a repository notes file carrying a prompt injection aimed at agents). The tool ignored the baseline's false 'all tests passed' claim and an injected 'mark this trial passed' line in model output. With equal cost, 6 pairs gave accept (6 of 6)
  • and the cost guardrail correctly gave need_more_work when the candidate used more turns. The experiment runner (not run in the earlier result) derived attribution correctly for the harness and runtime-profile axes and cleaned up its worktrees.

What breaks

  • All four breaks from the earlier result reproduced: with the Qoder runtime missing
  • compare waits the full timeout plus a 5 second grace and records a timeout even though the real 'runtime not found' error appears straight away (only in the trace)
  • the runtime receipt names an injected test executor
  • the package-tests text is the same for pass and fail
  • and compare exits 0 on insufficient_evidence (by design in the source). New: compare stayed alive about 52 seconds after writing its verdict. The compare runner's scope check ignores .gitignore
  • so a Python cache file created when the agent ran the tests failed every candidate trial as an out-of-scope change
  • while the experiment runner (which uses git status) did not flag it. Trial classification matches keywords in error text
  • so a model HTTP 500
  • a cut-off stream and a malformed chunk were scored as failed coding outcomes rather than infrastructure errors
  • and the run still ended accept. The timeout message names the Qoder SDK even for custom executors. The experiment runner never applies the manifest's required timeoutMs
  • so a hung executor ran on past 45 seconds with a 3 second limit. Without a git user identity
  • graded trials were thrown away as infrastructure errors at the final commit step. package-tests runs the agent-modified test script
  • so a script changed to 'exit 0' passed that check (the scope check still failed the trial).

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Confirmed partial 3/5: the evidence checks resisted false success claims and prompt injection, but the compare path's misleading timeouts reproduced, and new bugs in scope detection, fault classification, experiment timeouts and git-identity handling can mis-score trials.
