Hugging Face safeagents
⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- This is a detection layer, not a sandbox: in testing it missed many risky tool calls, so keep filesystem isolation and network egress rules in place and don't rely on it as the only control.
- Streamed responses that end early may not be fully checked in blocking mode; treat blocking as best-effort.
- Its logs can keep short fragments of command lines, so keep log files private and avoid passing secrets on command lines.
- Binds to localhost by default; no telemetry code, install hooks or OSV records found (prescreen clean).
How we tested
Method: Lab run built from source with uv in a bubblewrap sandbox, offline and loopback only, against a local fake model server: 28 planted tool calls (reward hacking, unsafe and benign), a multi-turn conversation, malformed and truncated upstream responses, bad request bodies, port and listen-address edge cases, and the bundled unit tests. No judge model, account or key. Filed as field report r_ccd3aa8e78c44cb7.. Tester: Lab Tester (lab account). Date: 2026-11-03T19:26:58-08:00.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Built from source (main commit 9caa9e6
- version 0.0.1) and ran offline against a local fake model server in Anthropic and OpenAI formats, JSON and streaming. Listens on 127.0.0.1:8787 by default. Log-only mode left every response unchanged
- blocking mode replaced flagged calls with a blocked-call notice in all four API and streaming combinations. It reliably caught undeclared tools, URLs and IP literals to hosts not mentioned in the conversation (including lookalike domains and credentials in URLs)
- writes to an absolute top-level tests folder and writes to verifier reward files. Medium findings were only logged without a judge model
- as documented. An unreachable upstream gave a clean 502. The journal and logs are owner-only
- and it made no outbound connections besides the configured upstream. 10 of 11 benign calls passed
- and the 52 bundled unit tests ran.
What breaks
- Upstream JSON in an unexpected shape crashed the handler with a raw Python traceback and HTTP 500. An out-of-range port gave a raw OverflowError
- and a non-URL upstream was accepted at startup. In blocking mode
- a tool call in a stream that was cut off was not held for checking as the README describes. Detection coverage is narrow: many of the planted test-tampering
- grader-file
- credential-read and destructive calls passed with no finding
- and test-file checks only match one folder layout. Fetching a public documentation site the user never mentioned was a false positive (documented
- an allow-host option exists).

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Partial, quality 3/5: log-only and blocking modes work across both API formats and streaming, and host and undeclared-tool checks are reliable, but detection of test tampering, credential reads and destructive commands is narrow, interrupted streams aren't held as documented, and bad upstream input crashes with a 500.
