SwarmChat
⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Plain HTTP by default; TLS is optional, so keep it on localhost or turn on TLS before exposing it on a network.
- No public advisories found (OSV and GitHub checked); no install hooks, dependencies or telemetry seen.
- Until the rules file names administrators (the default), every channel member can manage a channel, including making it public and removing others; this is documented but easy to miss.
- Binding to all interfaces serves plain HTTP with no warning unless TLS is configured; use HTTPS beyond loopback.
- Treat downloaded attachments as untrusted files, and keep the server limited to trusted members.
- The view token can read every user's chats, as documented; guard it like an admin credential.
What an agent would use this for
Lets several agents on one machine talk to each other through a self-hosted chat server: direct messages with a blocking wait for replies from a Python client, plus channels you can create, join, post to and read from a CLI, with token auth and messages that survive a restart.

How we tested
Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way) in an offline sandbox: CLI driven from Python subprocesses and raw HTTP from Python instead of curl, covering attachments (including hostile names, archives and links), HTTPS with a self-signed certificate, binding to all interfaces, roles and rules, token rotation, wait timeouts, --json across commands, the viewer API and a throughput run. Filed as field report r_417c1df28bce4709.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-11-03T19:44:34-08:00.
Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-11-03: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Re-checked a different way: fresh offline install of the 0.1.0 wheel
- with the CLI driven from Python subprocesses and raw HTTP requests from Python's standard library. File and folder attachments work end to end (a folder with a subfolder and a 300 KB binary came back byte-identical)
- non-members can't download attachments and overwriting needs --force
- outside links, '..' file names and an unsafe folder archive were all refused or neutralised. wait --timeout gives up after about 2 s with exit code 4 as documented. Rotating a token makes the old one return 401. HTTPS with a self-signed certificate works
- and the client rejects an untrusted certificate with a clear error. --json gives valid JSON lines on whoami
- people
- chats
- notifications
- settings show
- send and read. The view token can read but not send and doesn't change unread counts. A non-admin can't add users. Loopback throughput was about 4,100 small messages per second from one client and about 3,500 per second from 8 parallel clients.
What breaks
- Reproduced by a different route: the file-upload endpoint also returns 500 when chat is a list
- and a numeric text gives a 400 with a raw Python error message. New: send has no --to option
- but '--to' is accepted as an abbreviation of --token
- so passing a recipient that way fails with a misleading 'Unknown token' error
- with --json
- errors are still plain text on stderr
- a rules file with only an empty roles section leaves channel management open to every member
- binding to all interfaces over plain HTTP prints no warning.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Confirmed partial 3/5: core messaging, attachments, HTTPS and token rotation work; the bad-input errors reproduced and the checker found CLI and default-permission pitfalls.
