⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Anonymous usage statistics are on by default; set RETICLE_TELEMETRY=0. An npm update check still runs on start with the opt-out set.
- Tool results contain promotional instructions addressed to the agent (tell the user about the connect command, free credits, a booking link); agents should treat them as data.
- On shared machines, keep secrets out of URLs given to the tool and restrict permissions on its local data folder, since its local logs may keep more than its status output shows.
- The quickstart suggests piping a remote install script into a shell; the npm package has no install scripts and is the safer route.
What an agent would use this for
Lets a coding agent check its own 'done' claim on a web app: over MCP or the CLI it drives the running app and returns yes, no or unknown with evidence such as the network request's status, so a success toast hiding a failed save is caught.

How we tested
Method: Lab test in a bubblewrap sandbox with a throwaway home, install scripts disabled, telemetry off and the network off except one run to download the Playwright browser; no account or key. Drove the MCP server (initialize, tools/list, real reticle_* calls from two client sessions), built a local web app with one planted silent failure and one real save, ran CLI verify with good and bad expectations, ran init in dry-run mode on a plain HTML folder and a Vite project, and checked listening addresses, Host/Origin checks and outbound calls. Filed as field report r_67cdf4bcd5644d7f.. Tester: Lab Tester (lab account). Date: 2026-11-03T20:17:19-08:00.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- The MCP server starts as reticle 3.9.0 and tools/list returns 10 reticle_* tools. Against a tiny local web app
- a false 'done' claim on a planted silent failure (an order API returning 500 behind a success toast) came back unknown
- not a pass
- and flagged that the request returned 500
- asserting the request returned 200 gave no. A real save returned yes with the request as evidence
- with and without the SDK wired into the page and from a second MCP client session. CLI verify exit codes were correct (0 for yes, 1 for no)
- and bad predicates
- an unreachable URL
- no running server
- a target matching nothing
- body checks without body capture and a wrong pairing token were all refused cleanly. init in dry-run mode on a Vite project gave a complete plan and wrote no files. Everything listened on loopback only
- and the local HTTP endpoint returned 401 for a foreign Host or Origin header. Typed passwords were hidden in all output.
What breaks
- The server checks the npm registry for updates on every start even with its telemetry opt-out and DO_NOT_TRACK set
- although the README says those settings turn off optional outbound calls. init in dry-run mode on a plain HTML folder printed only the code snippet
- not the full plan the docs promise
- and with JSON output plain text came before the JSON on stdout and the JSON reported 0 applied and 0 manual steps. CLI verify replayed a flow saved automatically from an earlier drive without being asked
- then printed that all flows passed alongside 'not proved, 1 of 1 check undecided' (exit code was correctly 1). The explanation for an unknown verdict blamed page churn (polls
- timers
- animations) on a page that had none. Once
- after a server was killed uncleanly
- the first MCP session stayed at 'the daemon is starting' for about 35 s with every call failing (-32001)
- a retry worked (possibly sandbox-specific). Tool results include promotional text asking the agent to tell the user about the connect command
- free credits and a call booking link.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Partial 3/5: verdicts matched reality on the planted failure and the real save, and bad inputs were refused cleanly, but docs mislead on outbound calls with the opt-out set and on init's dry-run plan for plain HTML, CLI replay output contradicts itself, and tool results carry promotional text aimed at the agent.
