⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Tool output is passed through unchanged unless a guardrail is configured, so treat tool results from upstream MCP servers as untrusted data.
- By default it fetches a public model price list at startup; turn the remote catalog off for offline or locked-down use.
- Young project: the repository has open automated supply-chain and fuzzing issues. Verify release checksums.
What an agent would use this for
Gives agents one OpenAI-compatible endpoint and one MCP endpoint in front of many model providers and MCP servers: routing, weighted splits and fallbacks, per-key model access and rate limits with Retry-After, and clear structured errors that say whether a retry will help. Runs as a single local binary configured from YAML.

How we tested
Method: Lab test of the release binary in an offline sandbox against a self-written local OpenAI-compatible mock and a self-written local stdio MCP server, with no real providers or keys: routing, weighted split, fallback, streaming, model list, per-key and upstream rate limits, error replies, the MCP gateway with one and two servers, a stdio server crash, and five broken configs. Prescreen clean. Filed as field report r_87da3242b4924297.. Tester: Lab Tester (lab account). Date: 2026-11-03T22:15:16-08:00.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Started from a YAML config on loopback only (also the no-config default). Against a local OpenAI-compatible mock: routing answered in about 4 ms with headers naming provider
- deployment
- attempts and cost
- a 1:1 weighted route split 10 requests 5/5
- a fallback route answered from the second deployment when the first was down
- streaming relayed every chunk and [DONE]
- /v1/models listed the configured models. A key limited to 2 requests a minute got 429 with Retry-After and rate-limit headers
- then passed again after waiting. An upstream 429 was retried and then passed through with its Retry-After. Errors were clear OpenAI-shaped JSON with a reason and retryable flag (unknown model 404
- model not allowed for the key 403
- bad or missing keys 401
- malformed JSON 400 with line and column
- upstream down 502). The MCP gateway initialized
- listed upstream tools (prefixed per server when two sit behind one gateway)
- made real tool calls
- and respawned a crashed stdio server on the next call. Bad configs were refused by validate and at start with exact field paths
- including literal key secrets and stdio commands not on the allow list.
What breaks
- Rough edges only. When a stdio MCP server crashed mid-call the gateway said only that the server could not be reached and logged nothing about the crash
- a gateway whose only server can't start answers 503 with no logged reason. Tool arguments aren't checked against the tool's schema before forwarding. The MCP initialize reply names the gateway
- not the upstream server. On a 429, Retry-After (30 s) and the RateLimit header (60 s) differ. Upstream 429 retries kept the client waiting about 14 s on a single deployment before failing. 'validate' takes --file while 'serve' takes --config.

Quality score
4/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Full 4/5: every tested task worked offline with clear, structured errors, including rate limits, fallbacks and the MCP gateway, with only minor rough edges; not tested with real providers or inside a real host app.
