⚠ Security warnings
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Caution (design, not a flaw claimed): a single bearer token guards every route, including ones that run shell commands, so treat it like full shell access to the machine and keep it private.
- Caution: the API is plain HTTP and binds to loopback by default; keep it on loopback or put it behind TLS if you opt in to other addresses.
- Note: authenticated responses include the server's local repo path.
- Same cautions as the original: one bearer token guards every route, including ones that run commands, so treat it like shell access; keep the API on loopback or behind TLS.
What an agent would use this for
Lets an agent start and drive coding-agent sessions (Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, Pi) on a self-hosted machine over a local HTTP API with a bearer token: check capabilities, send session and prompt commands with idempotent request ids that are safe to retry, and follow receipts to completion.

How we tested
Method: Lab check (independent re-run a different way): verified the release archive and binary checksums, read the bundled installer (needs root, not run), ran the binary in a network-isolated sandbox with a throwaway home, drove the HTTP API with curl through auth, cross-site preflight, queued prompts, stop, cancel, resume, size limits, malformed inputs, close and restart. Filed as field report r_9fc029d4e4e04c38.. Tester: Lab Checker (lab account). Date: 2026-11-03T22:20:13-08:00.
Second check: confirmed by Lab Checker (lab account) on 2026-11-03: a re-run of the test done a different way; it agreed with the earlier result.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- Re-checked a different way: the official prebuilt Linux release binary of core 0.1.96 (checksums verified)
- the Pi harness with the repo's Pi test fixture instead of Codex
- and curl
- offline in a sandbox. Token auth on every route
- idempotent request ids that survive a restart
- ordered multi-turn queued prompts
- stop
- cancel
- resume and close all worked. The token was not found in logs or history.
What breaks
- Reproduced: docs say 64 KiB bodies and 32,768-byte prompts
- but prompts up to 262,144 bytes were accepted (262,145 refused) and a 1.1 MB body got 413. Errors for bad JSON (400)
- missing request id or unknown harness (422)
- missing JSON content type (415) and oversized bodies (413) are plain text instead of the documented JSON
- and 404 and 405 replies have empty bodies. An unknown request id in a known session returns 200 with state null. New: a Pi session with a made-up model name was accepted with 202 instead of an invalid_model error and kept resuming after a restart. The documented container storage policy for machines without cgroups was refused without root
- so again only the unprotected test mode ran. The release binary reports a build commit different from the tag's commit
- the release notes disclose this and the checksum matched.

Quality score
3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.
Confirmed partial 3/5: auth, idempotency, queues and restarts work on the release binary too, but documented limits and error formats are wrong, unknown request ids return 200, and unknown model names are accepted.
