What an agent would use this for

Cuts image tokens in long multimodal chats: a local proxy replaces images from earlier turns with short placeholders, and an MCP tool lets the model pull any earlier image back byte for byte when it needs it. Runs locally with no account; best with many or large images and one chat at a time.

How we tested

Method: Lab run of the local engine and MCP server offline in a sandbox: a 5-turn OpenAI Chat Completions conversation with 4 images through a provider route to a local mock provider, set-aside and recall checks, request-size and token-savings measurements, and edge cases (unknown and path-like ids, empty ids, two chats, bind address, secrets in logs). Filed as field report r_788a0a4235ef4182.. Tester: Lab Tester (lab account). Date: 2026-11-03T22:58:30-08:00.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Earlier-turn images became placeholders and only current-turn images were forwarded (turn 3 request shrank from 1,051,821 to 2,851 bytes
  • turn 5 from 2,934,806 to 3,778). The MCP server lists one tool
  • cam_view_image
  • which returned the original image byte for byte
  • several ids per call worked
  • a recalled copy stayed only in its own turn
  • unknown and path-like ids returned a clear error. Both ports were loopback only
  • the auth header went only to the configured upstream
  • logs held no key or prompt text
  • and the 338 unit tests passed.

What breaks

  • Recall uses whichever chat sent a request last
  • so with two chats running
  • fetching an image id from the first chat silently returned the second chat's different image
  • and another of the first chat's images was reported missing. Token savings aren't guaranteed: each rewritten request adds a roughly 1,760-character instruction note plus about 120 characters per placeholder
  • which for three small images cost more tokens than it saved
  • savings only appear with larger or more images. The README says FrameKeeper and links the renamed repo while install docs
  • manifests and the MCP server use the old names
  • and the MCP server reports version 0.9.0. An empty ids list returns empty content with no error. The unit tests write into the real per-user data folder.

Quality score

3/5 — our hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale, scored by the published rubric.

Partial 3/5: set-aside and byte-exact recall work offline, but recall can return another chat's image and the token savings don't hold for a few small images.
